Vol. 201 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Criticisms of National College of Art.

69.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Education what steps have been taken to deal with the criticisms implied in the Scandinavian visitors' report on the National College of Art.

I would refer the Deputies to my reply of 22nd February, 8th March, 4th April, 7th November and 15th November, 1962, to their previous questions on this subject.

In those replies the Minister gave us to understand that he was taking some action to investigate the position and presumably deal with it. Could I ask the Minister now has he taken any steps to investigate the matter and has he taken any steps to deal with the matter?

Starting in September next I expect there will be a certain reorganisation of the college. There will be new posts and new appointments on the staff. The long-term educational problem will take more time to solve.

Could I ask whether the new posts to which the Minister refers and the reorganisation refer only to the question of design or to the whole question of the teaching of art— sculpture, painting, modelling, and so on—in the college?

The appointments will be mainly concerned with design. Reorganisation will involve the whole college.

May I take it the Minister has completed his investigations? Has he now considered proposals? Are his proposals ready? Are they available? Could he give us any outline as to what the proposals are?

I will do that when I am ready. I will announce the proposals when they are ready.

Could I ask the Minister does he wish us to put a question down? Can he give us any specific period in which we could ask for further information? Is is a question of a week, a month, three months, or what?

I will be making announcements—I think that is the best way to put it—from time to time. They will not all come together.

The Minister might shock us too much.
