Vol. 201 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - History Courses.

36.

asked the Minister for Education for how long a period of time it is proposed to continue ending the intermediate certificate examination history course at 1921 and the leaving certificate course at 1916; and whether he has any plans for the extension to more modern times of either of these courses.

37.

asked the Minister for Education if he will consider enlarging the scope of the leaving certificate history course with a view to (a) giving greater choice of periods to be studied each year, and (b) enabling schools, which have to combine fifth and sixth year history classes owing to smallness of numbers, to concentrate with both classes on the same period each year.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take questions Nos. 36 and 37 together.

I am having an examination made of the curriculum for secondary schools in the light of the report of the Council of Education and the views thereon submitted by the various bodies concerned. The matters referred to by the Deputy are among those falling for consideration in that connection.
