Vol. 201 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Surtax Payments.

9.

asked the Minister for Finance (a) the estimated amount of surtax paid in 1962-63, and (b) the estimated amount of surtax which would have been paid in 1962-63 if the surtax reductions effected since 1958 had not been made.

The approximate net receipt of surtax in 1962-63 was £2,225,000. As regards the second part of the Deputy's question it is estimated that the cost in a full year of the surtax reliefs granted by the Finance Acts of 1959 and 1961 is about £630,000.

10.

asked the Minister for Finance the amount of surtax payable on an income of £5,000 per year by a married man with two schoolgoing children in 1957-58 and 1962-63.

For 1957-58, the surtax payable by a married man with two children in respect of whom child allowance was due was £443 15s. The corresponding amount for 1962-63 is £233 5s.

Having regard to the substantial reduction in the yield of surtax and having regard to the mitigations of surtax the Minister has made in the past few years, will he consider restoring the cuts in surtax as an alternative to the introduction of a sales tax on the lower income group?

That is a separate matter.

It would not be appreciable.
