asked the Minister for Lands when the first oyster plantation was made by his Department in Clew Bay; what variety of oysters was planted; what subsequent plantation was made; and what is the present state of the oyster bed.

The first of a series of annual plantations of oysters in a selected area of Clew Bay was made in 1949 when 117,000 European flat oysters purchased in Brittany were laid down. Further lots of approximately 100,000 oysters of the same type and from the same source were planted in each of the succeeding six years. In 1956 17,000 Galway Bay oysters were also laid down in the area. A scientific investigation of the oyster beds is at present in progress and the results are expected to be available before the end of this year.

Which of these categories of oysters mentioned in the Parliamentary Secretary's reply is the category described by the Minister as unsuitable and requiring replacement?
