41.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will give a comprehensive list of railway branch lines closed by CIE since the coming into operation of the Transport Act, 1958, together with the mileage of line closed in each case.

The reply to the Deputy's question is in the form of a tabular statement which I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate with the Official Report.

You would want a special report to fit them all in.

42.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether, in all cases where branch railway lines have been closed since 1958, equivalent services of (a) road freight and (b) road passenger vehicles have been provided by CIE; if not, in which cases such services were not provided; and whether such road services have been profitable in each case.

In all cases when CIE has terminated railway services since 1958, the Board has provided substitute road services. I am informed by CIE that all such substitute services have shown a financial betterment compared with the former rail services.
