Vol. 202 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Boyle (Roscommon) Estate.

9.

asked the Minister for Lands what progress has been made by the Land Commission towards the acquisition of the Fletcher Estate, Croghan, Boyle, County Roscommon.

This 154 acre estate is at present the subject of an inspection and valuation —jointly by the Land Commission and Forestry Division—with a view to considering the question of making an offer for purchase of the property.

In view of the fact that on 31st October, 1962, the Minister assured me that a decision would be made in this case as soon as possible, is he now satisfied that the delay which has ensued is reasonable in the circumstances?

This is a question of voluntary purchase. There is timber involved as well as land and the valuation is proceeding for the purpose of reaching agreement. While these negotiations are going on, I think the less said about the matter at this stage, the better.

Is the Minister aware that this farm is alleged to have been sold within the past fortnight to another buyer?

I am not so aware. I am giving the Deputy the latest information I have.

Will the Minister bring that statement—which I cannot confirm—that this farm has now been purchased by an outsider, in spite of the Land Commission's attempt to purchase it, to the attention of his officials? Under the circumstances, will the Minister undertake to see that if such purchase has taken place it will not interfere with the Land Commission's efforts to acquire the farm?

I have already explained the powers of the Land Commission under the law in this connection. I have no information about the Deputy's allegation about a separate sale. As far as my information goes, the present negotiations are proceeding.

The Minister hopes to bring them to a successful conclusion?

That is my hope.
