Vol. 202 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork City School Accommodation.

22.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that at a recent meeting of the Cork city branch of the INTO grave dissatisfaction was expressed at the inadequacy of school accommodation in Cork city, and particularly in the newly built-up suburban districts; and if he will comment on this matter.

I am so aware. Since 1st April, 1955, over 4,000 school places have been provided in the city by way of new schools, reconstructed premises and extensions to existing schools.

Works on hands and projected for completion in the next few years will provide about 3,300 extra places.

My Department is taking up with those persons concerned locally all cases where additional accommodation may be required which would entail extension of existing accommodation or enlargement of projected future provision.

I take it the Minister does acknowledge that there is a very serious problem confronting parents in the newly built-up suburbs in Cork where it is almost impossible to send a child to school at the age at which children should be sent. If, by any chance, it is possible to get children enrolled in a school, they are in overcrowded classrooms. Is the Minister aware that the new accommodation seems to have been planned on a totally inadequate scale? Will the Minister comment on that?

A comment is not necessary because I have already said to Deputy Galvin that I am taking up with the persons concerned all cases in which additional accommodation may be required.

The Minister might consult the parents as well.

Yes, I will consult the parents' representatives.
