Vol. 202 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Military Police Duties.

25.

asked the Minister for Defence whether the NCOs who are now discharging the duties of military police, while the military police are acting on transport duty, are to receive the 52/6d. a week technicians' allowance normally payable to military police.

The maximum difference between line and technical rates of pay for NCOs is 8/9d. a week and not 52/6d. a week as mentioned by the Deputy.

NCOs who are temporarily performing duties at the entrances to military barracks while the military police are engaged on the special transport service will continue to receive their normal rate of pay, but no special allowance will be paid for the discharge of this duty.

Will they receive the supplementary grant that they get as military police?

They are not acting as military police. They have taken over part of the duties of the military police, that is, the gate duty. It is not considered that that entitles them to any extra pay.

Does that mean that because the military police are assigned to another duty in the public interest, they are to suffer a financial loss?

The military police assigned to transport duty are receiving additional pay.
