Vol. 202 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Estate and Legacy Duty.

2.

asked the Minister for Finance the amount collected by the State in estate and legacy duty in the last available twelve months, and the cost of collecting it.

The net receipts in respect of Estate etc. Duties in the year ended 31st March, 1963, were as follows:—

Estate Duty (including Pro-

£

bate and Account Duty)

2,993,274

Legacy Duty

352,737

Succession Duty

152,726

Corporation Duty

1,930

TOTAL

3,500,667

The estimated total cost of collection (including cost of services rendered by other Departments) is £100,000. It is not practicable to apportion this figure amongst the various headings shown above.

Would the Minister not consider that that is one of the highest percentage rates within his Department?

Much higher than the turnover tax.

It would cost more to collect than the turnover tax? Is that a fact? Will it cost more than the turnover tax?

This is much higher.

But you are getting something out of it anyhow.

Not so much.
