Vol. 202 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Survey.

8.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is satisfied that the recent housing survey carried out by his Department is comprehensive enough to highlight the housing needs of the country.

The survey which I requested housing authorities to initiate in 1960 was intended to ascertain the condition of the housing stock and, in particular, the total number of unfit dwellings in each area. It would not indicate housing needs which have arisen through overcrowding, new family formation and sub-tenanting in dwellings otherwise not unfit for occupation.

That would indicate that the housing survey is not complete of all the housing requirements in the country?

No; it was not intended to be.

How will it be possible to determine how many houses are required in the country, unless a complete survey is carried out?

I suppose the other information is available from the local authorities.

Has every housing authority completed its survey?

No; they are not all completed yet.

Is there a high percentage?

There is.

Has Dublin been done?

Dublin and Cork county boroughs were not asked to do it. They had already done it in recent years. The information was relatively sufficiently up to date in regard to Dublin and Cork.
