Vol. 203 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost of Living Increase.

10.

asked the Taoiseach if he is aware of the recent increase in the cost of living; whether the Government have any means of stopping this continual rise; and, if so, what steps they propose to take.

I assume that the question relates to the most recently published Consumer Price Index—as at mid-February last.

The rounded mid-February Consumer Price Index (base: mid-August, 1947=100) exceeded the mid-November figure of 157 by reason of increases in the prices of eggs, potatoes and cabbage.

Recent cost-of-living developments here are less unfavourable than in Western Europe generally and, in the opinion of the Government, do not call for special measures at this time.
