Vol. 203 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Increase in Unemployment.

11.

asked the Taoiseach if he is aware of the increase of 8,000 approximately in the unemployment figures since last year; what is the cause of this increase; and what specific immediate steps the Government propose to take to reduce this figure.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply given to a similar question by Deputy Corish on 7th May. The greater part of the increase in the live register total in recent weeks was due, directly or indirectly, to the strike affecting the Córas Iompair Éireann road-passenger service.

So we may expect the new figure will be comparable with the figure for last year?

The Deputy may expect it will be down this week as compared with last week.

The same as for the corresponding period last year?

Much better than the corresponding period in 1957?

And certainly much better than 1933.

Those boys are now in Birmingham.

Who brought them out?

You did, every one of them. There has been a five per cent increase in the population of Greater London as a result.

Deputies opposite seem to be thriving on the diet of stale cake they were getting from their Party's Árd Fheis.

Three hundred thousand of them shipped to Birmingham.
