Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Customs and Excise Revenue.

28.

asked the Minister for Finance (a) the total tax revenue from customs and excise in the financial year 1962-63, and (b) the total revenue collected in respect of the following commodities: (i) petrol, (ii) cigarettes and tobacco, (iii) beer, wines and spirits, and (iv) other beverages.

As the answer includes a tabular statement, I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—

(a) The total net receipts from Customs and Excise duties in the financial year 1962-63 were approximately £81,518,000.

(b) The following are the detailed particulars requested:—

(a) Separate particulars in respect of petrol are not available but almost all of the receipts of duty under this heading (mineral hydrocarbon light oil) are derived from petrol.

(b) Receipts are included in respect of imported wines only; home-made wines are not subject to duty.

asked the Minister for Finance the amount of revenue received in the year 1962-63 on the sale of one gallon of petrol, cigarettes per 20 standard packet, and a glass of (i) Scotch whisky, (ii) Irish whiskey, (iii) brandy, (iv) gin, and (v) rum.

The answer is in the form of a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

(a) Following the 1962 Budget the duty content of a packet of 20 standard-size cigarettes rose to 2s. 5d. with effect from 11 April, 1962. The Imposition of Duties (No. 123) (Tobacco) Order, 1962, had the effect of increasing this figure to 2s. 6d. with effect from 14 June, 1962.
