Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Land Division.

81.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware of the great need for land division in the Currandulla area, County Galway; and what steps he proposes to take to meet that need.

In recent years the question of securing an adequate pool of land to be used as a working basis for resettlement of this particular part of Co. Galway has been engaging the close attention of the Land Commission. Only last year, a 295-acre holding in the district was taken over for division while acquisition proceedings are pending in respect of a further 240 acres. With a view to augmenting the amount of land obtainable through acquisition, ten families have been migrated from this locality within the past two years, making available to the Land Commission an aggregate area of about 230 acres, apart from some commonage shares. The substantial area already on the hands of the Land Commission, together with any further lands which way be acquired in the district generally, will be utilised to relieve prevailing congestion but some additional migrations are considered desirable to permit the formulation of a comprehensive and well-balanced scheme of resettlement for the district.
