Vol. 203 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Cahore (Wexford) Estate.

17.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission have any plans for the acquisition of the Smith Estate, Cahore, County Wexford.

The Land Commission had this estate inspected recently but decided not to proceed for acquisition of the lands.

Is the Minister aware that this land has been let for a considerable number of years? Is he further aware that there is a small holder adjacent to this land who, I understand, was recommended for land? Could he tell the House why the Land Commission, whose function it is to extend small holdings, did nothing about it?

This power is vested exclusively in the Land Commission. I understand that it is the intention of the owner to return there shortly and that the lands were in fact well worked. The Land Commission, in their wisdom, have decided for the present not to acquire these lands. They can of course review the position if they think fit and the circumstances justify it at any time.

Could the Minister indicate for how long the lands have been let?

From June, 1961. That is the only information I have here.

For the first time?

So it would appear from this file.
