Vol. 203 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Labourers' Cottages.

12.

asked the Minister for Local Government the number of labourers' cottages built in County Longford in each of the last three years; and how many will be erected in the coming year.

Longford County Council erected ten cottages in the year ended 31st March, 1961, three in the year neded 31st March, 1962, and 18 in the year ended 31st March, 1963.

I am not in a position to state the number of cottages which will be erected by the council during the coming year.

13.

asked the Minister for Local Government the number of labourers' cottages built in County Westmeath in each of the last three years; and how many will be erected in the coming year.

Westmeath County Council erected five cottages in the year ended 31st March, 1961, 15 in the year ended 31st March, 1962, and 39 in the year ended 31st March, 1963.

I am not in a position to state the number of houses which will be erected by the council during the coming year.

14.

asked the Minister for Local Government what proposals are at present before his Department for the erection of cottages in (a) Longford and (b) Westmeath; the areas in which they will be situated; and when sanction will be forthcoming.

A proposal from Longford County Council for approval to the acceptance of tenders for the erection of four cottages in the townlands of Derraghanmore, Newtownflanagan, Carrigeen and Trillickacurry is under examination in the Department. A decision in the matter will issue as soon as possible.

There are no proposals from Westmeath County Council for the erection of cottages before my Department at present.

15.

asked the Minister for Local Government the number of cottages required to fulfil all requirements in (a) Longford and (b) Westmeath; and when it is expected that those needs will be finally satisfied.

The only information available to me as to needs is the result of the survey of unfit houses furnished to my Department by the housing authorities concerned. This indicated that there were 58 unfit houses in the Longford county health district and 326 in the Westmeath county health district, the occupants of which are regarded by the housing authority as eligible for rehousing by them. The information sought in the last part of the question is not available in my Department.
