48.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state in respect of a special allowance the maximum award payable to (a) a married man under seventy years of age and (b) a single man under seventy years of age.

A special allowance is an annual sum of such amount as when added to an applicant's yearly means will not equal or exceed a prescribed sum. The prescribed sums for married or single applicants under 70 years are as follows :—

(a) Married

£156

(b) Single

£130

In the case of a married applicant a sum of £11 14s. Od. is payable in respect of each child of the marriage who is under the age of 18 years or if over that age is incapable of self-support by reason of permanent infirmity.
