Vol. 204 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - South-West Cork Forestry Programme.

21.

asked the Minister for Lands how the forestry programme is progressing in South-West Cork; and if he will indicate (1) how many acres have been acquired, (2) how many acres are being prepared, (3) how many acres have been planted, and (4) the employment given.

A total productive area of 19,389 acres has been acquired to date for forestry in South-West Cork, and 12,637 acres have been planted. An area of 1,434 acres is being prepared for planting in the 1963-64 planting season.

A total of 240 men is employed by the Forestry Division in the area at present. Progress in general is regarded as very satisfactory.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary explain why he is able to give the information and statistics with regard to forestry for South-West Cork and he cannot give the information with regard to land division for the same area?

It is an administrative matter.

Surely if it can be arranged for forestry, there should be no objection to doing the same——

It does not arise.

Forestry areas can be organised on a different basis.
