Vol. 204 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dún Laoghaire Car Ferry Service.

17.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is now in a position to say when work will commence on the provision of facilities for a car-ferry service to Dún Laoghaire; if he can state how long it will take to complete the work; the estimated total cost; and the estimated number of persons who will be employed on the work.

18.

Mr. Brady

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state, with reference to the car-ferry landing stage proposed to be built at East Pier, Dún Laoghaire, when the work will start; how many (a) skilled and (b) unskilled men will be employed; how long it will take to complete the work; and what is the estimated cost.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take questions Nos. 17 and 18 together.

As the Deputies are aware, British Railways only recently announced their decision to operate a car-ferry service between Dún Laoghaire and Holyhead and gave particulars of the size of the ferry which will be used. The vessel will be of greater capacity than was originally expected and the tentative scheme already prepared by the Office of Public Works for the provision of terminal facilities at Dún Laoghaire will have to be re-examined. With a view to settling precise requirements discussions are taking place with representatives of British Railways this week. Until plans have been finalised it will not be possible to furnish the detailed information requested by the Deputies but they can rest assured that the work will proceed with all possible speed.
