Vol. 204 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Housing.

21.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether, in view of the deplorable housing conditions of thousands of families in the city of Dublin, he will consider the advisability of recommending to the Dublin Corporation the erection of prefabricated dwellings as a temporary emergency measure.

The initiation of proposals for the provision of prefabricated local authority dwellings or the adoption of industrialised building methods is a function of the housing authority concerned. My Department has had under review the merits of the adoption of such systems and the corporation are aware that I would welcome the submission of any proposal which they might consider appropriate towards fulfilment of their programme.

In an earlier reply to a Mayo Deputy with regard to the condition of a city street, the Minister was good enough to say that he would forward the matter to the corporation for consideration. Would he also do that in relation to Deputy Declan Costello's question?

According to Press reports, the corporation have been considering these matters for some time.

22.

asked the Minister for Local Government the original estimate for the number of dwellings which would be erected by the Dublin Corporation in the current financial year; whether there has been any decision taken to increase this number by reason of the collapse of houses in Dublin; and, if so, if he will state the revised figure for the current financial year.

I informed the Deputy on 25th June, 1963, that I do not receive from the corporation formal statements of proposed building programmes. My Department is, however, in constant communication with the corporation on matters relating to the progress of their schemes and is aware that the housing authority is increasing its output of new dwellings. The corporation are assured of my co-operation in this regard.
