Vol. 205 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Wexford Housing Needs.

30.

asked the Minister for Local Government what are the housing needs in each of the five local authority areas in Wexford; and what immediate steps are being taken to meet such needs.

It is a matter for each local authority to assess from time to time the number of new dwellings required to be provided in their area under the Housing of the Working Classes Acts and the Labourers Acts. Figures so assessed are not usually furnished to my Department except in conjunction with specific housing proposals.I am not accordingly in a position to give the information sought in reply to the first part of the question.

Results of the housing survey carried out in these areas, which indicate needs in so far as unfit housing only is concerned, were given by me in my reply to a question by the Deputy on 18th June last.

On 30th September, 1963, the latest date for which figures are available, 15 houses were under construction in the Wexford county health district, 28 houses in Wexford borough and 6 in New Ross urban district.

Tenders have been approved by me for the erection of 28 houses in Enniscorthy urban district and 20 houses in New Ross urban district. In addition, I understand that proposals for the erection of 126 houses at Slippery Green by Wexford Corporation and for 27 rural cottages by Wexford County Council are at the tender stage, while schemes are at the planning stage for a further 36 houses in Wexford borough and for 20 houses in Gorey town.
