Vol. 205 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Closing of Grand Canal.

49.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Local Government whether his attention has been drawn to a proposal by the Streets Committee of Dublin Corporation to fill in the Grand Canal through Dublin; if he has received any proposals in the matter; and if he will reject any such proposals.

I have received copies of reports made by the Assistant City Manager and the City Engineer to the Streets Committee of Dublin City Council in regard to drainage proposals which would involve a partial closure of the Grand Canal. I understand that these reports will come before the Council at its November meeting. No formal proposal has been made to me. Any such proposal would require detailed examination and consultation with the other Departments and interests involved and I am not in a position at this stage to say what would be the outcome.

I take it that before any decision is made by the Minister, the other Departments such as Industry and Commerce and Transport and Power will also be consulted in this matter?

Yes, all concerned.

Is it not a fact that unless legislation is passed by this House, the Grand Canal cannot be closed while one boat in every three years sails up it?

That is the law.
