Vol. 205 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sand Damage to Mayo Holdings.

54.

asked the Minister for Lands if any steps can be taken by his Department to reduce the damage being caused by blowing sand to holdings on the Mullet Peninsula and in the townlands of Doohana, Doolough and Doona, County Mayo.

The Land Commission have already carried out a number of schemes designed to arrest blowing sand in the Belmullet Peninsula. However, should the Deputy furnish details of particular areas where sand blowing is now causing damage, I shall ask the Land Commission to make early investigations.

I may say that the Land Commission at a cost of £750, have already carried out a scheme to arrest sand blowing in the townland of Doolough and the bent grass planted to "settle" the sand is preserved from cutting by virtue of Orders in force under Section 36 Land Act, 1936.
