Vol. 205 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Curragh Sheep Claims.

59.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware of the most unsatisfactory position in relation to the protection of sheep claims on the Curragh, County Kildare; and when he proposes to take steps to prevent unauthorised sheep trespassing.

I am aware that sheep have been put to graze on the Curragh without authority. Trespass proceedings which were instituted in 1961, however, by the Office of Public Works were dismissed on the grounds that the bye-laws dated 4th December, 1868 were not proved.

New bye-laws, as provided for in Section 16 of the Curragh of Kildare Act 1961, have been drafted and will be promulgated as soon as possible. They will deal with, among other things, the prevention of trespass on the property.

Is the Minister aware of the urgency of the matter, in view of the fact that this year, on account, some 3,000 sheep were found to have been placed illegally on the Curragh?

I take it the matter is being set to rights.

Can the Minister say when the bye-laws will be made?

I expect them to be promulgated within the next two months or so.
