Vol. 205 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - North Dublin Traffic Lights and Crossings.

62.

Mr. Belton

asked the Minister for Justice whether a decision has yet been reached on the provision of traffic lights at the junction of Collins Avenue and Malahide Road, Dublin, as this matter has been agreed by Dublin Corporation and referred to the Garda authorities; if so, what decision; and, if not, when a decision will be made.

The Deputy has been misinformed. The present position in this matter is that a statutory request for the provision of traffic lights at this junction was sent to the Dublin Corporation by the Commissioner, Garda Síochána, on 10th October. The traffic lights will be erected during the present financial year.

63.

Mr. Belton

asked the Minister for Justice whether a decision has yet been reached on the provision of uncontrolled pedestrian crossings on (a) Collins Avenue at Belton Park, Dublin, (b) Malahide Road at Donnycarney Road, and (c) Howth Road at the top of Castle Avenue, as this was agreed by Dublin Corporation and referred to the Garda authorities; if so, what decision; and, if not, when a decision will be made.

The Deputy has been misinformed. As far as the Garda Síochána are aware, these proposals have not been agreed to by the Dublin Corporation. The facts are that the Corporation have informed the Garda, without any comment as to the merits, that requests have been received by the Corporation for pedestrian crossings at these three places, but there are about 60 crossings within the city in respect of which similar requests have been received, or which the Corporation or the Garda themselves think merit consideration, whereas the financial provision by the Corporation in the current year's estimates is sufficient only for ten.

In these circumstances, the Corporation requested that all the crossings concerned be made the subject of surveys, which include traffic counts and so on, by representatives of the Garda, the Corporation, and the Department of Local Government with a view to the fixing of an agreed priority list, which will then be formally presented to the Corporation. The Garda hope that the survey will be completed in a few weeks' time.
