Vol. 206 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sligo Airport Project.

44.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if there are any proposals before his Department for the establishment of an airport or airstrip in the vicinity of Sligo town; and what contributions he would be prepared to make from State funds towards such a project.

A request from the Sligo Borough Council for the provision and maintenance of an airport in the area was recently made to me. I informed the council that, while the establishment of further State airports was not contemplated at present, I would welcome the establishment in the northwest or west of the country of airstrips suitable for small aircraft.

There are no State funds at my disposal to enable me to contribute towards such projects. I am prepared at all times, however, to make the technical advice of my Department available in connection with any scheme for the development of such facilities.
