Vol. 206 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Remuneration of Rate Collectors.

75.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Local Government if he has received from rate collectors paid on poundage system any requests for payment of a salary equivalent to their 1961-62 earnings; from what local authority areas he has received such requests; and what decision or decisions he has made.

Requests by rate collectors for an alteration in the basis of their remuneration would be for consideration by their employing local authorities in the first instance. Proposals for a change-over from a poundage to a salaried basis of remuneration for their rate collectors were submitted to me by the county councils of Cavan, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Monaghan, Offaly, Waterford, Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow. These proposals have been sanctioned with the exception of that from Wexford County Council which is under examination. In the majority of the cases the salaries are individual salaries based on earnings in respect of the year 1961-62.

The remaining questions for oral answer will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
