Vol. 206 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - River Suir Survey.

6.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Finance what progress has been made to date in the survey of the River Suir, which was begun in 1960; and when it is likely to be completed.

A little more than half of this survey has been done and I am advised that it will be completed in 1965. To help the House in appreciating the amount of investigatory work involved in an engineering survey of a catchment of this size, I mention that there are about 90 miles of main river and up to 1,000 miles of tributaries to be examined. Cross-sections of these have to be made at 100 yard intervals as well as probing and sub-soil testing.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary indicate, if he has the information readily available, what stage in priority the Suir has in respect of drainage generally in the country?

If the survey is completed in 1965, there is no reason why, the work having gone through the usual procedure of exhibition, and so on, could not proceed, after these statutory obligations are discharged.
