Vol. 206 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of West Cork River.

5.

asked the Minister for Finance what is the position regarding the drainage of the Argideen River from Timoleague to Carrig-Faha, County Cork; and when the 1,060 farmers affected can hope for relief.

I would refer the Deputy to my answer to a similar question on 23rd October, 1963, when I stated that "the Arigideen River is part of the Owenkeagh catchment area. This has been surveyed by the Commissioners of Public Works with a view to a scheme under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945. The results show that the works required are very expensive in relation to the value of the land capable of improvement and it is difficult to evolve a satisfactory scheme. However, I am arranging that the final examination of this catchment will be taken up soon and I hope to have a decision on the proposal in the next few months". There is nothing that I can usefully add at this stage.
