Vol. 206 No. 4

Written Answers. - Vocational Schools.

44.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state in respect of the school year, 1960-61, or such later year for which figures may now be available to him, the following particulars for each permanent vocational school in each county and county borough: (a) name and location, (b) capital cost and number of classrooms, (c) number of full-time pupils on rolls, (d) number of full-time pupils in average attendance, (e) number of part-time pupils on rolls, (f) total number of attendance hours made by such part-time pupils, and (g) number of full-time teachers and number of part-time teachers.

In the school-year, 1961/62, classes and courses were given under the auspices of vocational education committees at 456 centres, other than permanent vocational schools, throughout the country. The types of premises used were very varied, and included parish halls, hospitals and other institutions, national schools, industrial schools and private dwellinghouses. The drawing up of a comprehensive list of the premises used for the purpose of these classes and courses and of the further information requested by the Deputy in regard to them would entail such an expenditure of time and labour on the part of Vocational Education Committees and the Department as would not be warranted by the result. In general, however, classes and courses provided at non-permanent centres are conducted by full-time and part-time teachers whose main employment is in permanent vocational schools.

45.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state for each permanent vocational school in each county or county borough, constructed in the past 20 years, and not now in use as a vocational school, the name, location, capital cost, number of classrooms, date of opening, date of closing, the number of pupils and of full and part-time teachers at the date of closing, and the reason, if known to him, why such schools are not now operating as vocational schools.

None of the buildings provided as permanent vocational schools in the past 20 years has ceased to be used as a vocational school.

46.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the name and location of each vocational school in each county and county borough classified by his Department as a higher technical school, or technological college.

Under Section 38 of the Vocational Education Act, 1930, a day technical college may be established only under a vocational education committee for a borough vocational education area. These areas are the county boroughs of Cork, Dublin, Limerick and Waterford. The following institutions in those areas qualify for the description of day technical college:

The Sharman Crawford Technical Institute, Cork.

The School of Commerce and Domestic Science, Cork.

The School of Music, Cork.

The School of Art, Cork.

The College of Technology, Bolton Street, Dublin.

The College of Technology, Kevin Street, Dublin.

The College of Commerce, Rathmines, Dublin.

The College of Music, Dublin.

Coláiste Mhuire Le Tíos, Dublin.

The Municipal Technical Institute, Limerick.

The School of Commerce, Music and Art, Limerick.

The Municipal Technical Institute, Waterford.

There is no formal classification of "higher technical school" or "technological college".

47.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state in respect of the school year 1960-61, or such later year for which figures may now be available to him, the following particulars for each non - permanent vocational centre in each county and county borough: (a) name and location, (b) capital cost and number of classrooms, (c) number of full-time pupils on rolls, (d) number of full-time pupils in average attendance, (e) number of part-time pupils on rolls, (f) total number of attendance hours made by such part-time pupils, and (g) number of full-time teachers and number of part-time teachers.

The information requested is not fully available in my Department's records. The following statement, however, contains such relevant particulars as are available:

asked the Minister for Education if he will give details as to (i) the number of candidates from vocational schools and higher technical schools, or colleges of technology, in respect of each county and county borough taking mathematical, scientific, technical or technological or professional examinations conducted by bodies from outside the State, e.g. examinations such as the English General Certificate of Education, London City and Guilds, British National Certificate (various stages), London University, and all other examinations of this type and (ii) the subjects taken; and if he will state for the country as a whole the number of candidates taking each subject at each level, and the number of passes and failures amongst such candidates.

There is no official information available to my Department on the outside examinations chosen by the students concerned.

50.

asked the Minister for Education the number of candidates from vocational schools or colleges of technology who took the secondary Leaving Certificate Examination of his Department in 1963, and the number of honours, passes and failures amongst such candidates in each of the subjects taken.

The candidates in question, together with others, are admitted to the examination under a special provision intended for those not eligible to present as recognised pupils in secondary schools. Such candidates are not obliged to indicate the type of school, if any, being attended by them.

Of the 1786 extern candidates, however, so admitted, the Departmental records show 312 as coming from Vocational Schools and Colleges of Technology. The results obtained by these 312 candidates are given in a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to have circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—
