Vol. 206 No. 4

Written Answers. - Local Authority Scholarships.

51.

asked the Minister for Education the total number of scholarships awarded by county or county borough councils, tenable in secondary, vocational and other approved schools and held in the year 1960-61 or such later year for which figures may now be available to him, and the number held in (a) secondary schools, (b) vocational schools, (c) other approved schools; if he will state the type of school covered by other approved schools; and if he will give any explanation known to his Department as to why so few of these scholarships seem to be held at vocational schools.

The number of post-primary scholarships awarded by county and county borough councils and tenable in the school-year 1962-63 was 3,870. Of these, 3,764 were held in secondary schools, 25 in vocational schools and 81 in other approved schools. Of this last category, the majority are held in the approved secondary divisions attached to some national schools and the remainder in training colleges or in commercial sections attached to recognised secondary schools.

There is no information available in the Department as to why a scholarship-holder selects any particular approved school.
