Vol. 206 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Radio Reception in Wexford.

15.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the very bad reception from all stations after 5 p.m. in the south-west area of Wexford; and, if so, if he will ensure that owners of wireless sets in that area will get a better service in the immediate future.

I am aware that reception of the Radio Éireann programmes is unsatisfactory in parts of Wexford, particularly after dark when interference from foreign stations becomes pronounced. The Broadcasting Authority is giving special attention to the improvement of radio reception in areas like Wexford, but it has not yet come to a definite conclusion on how the problem should be solved. Provision is, however, being made in the Broadcasting Authority (Amendment) Bill, 1963—which was circulated recently—in respect of the capital cost of whatever solution will be adopted.

Is there a hope that there will be a solution ?

There is hope this time ? This has been going on for the past 30 years.

I am well aware of that but the money has not been provided until now.

We were always led to believe that it was a technical difficulty which was the cause of the trouble.

It was a matter of money also.
