Vol. 206 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Permanent Quarters for Itinerants.

20.

asked the Minister for Local Government what arrangements are to be made by Dublin Corporation to provide suitable alternative permanent camping quarters for the itinerants at present being displaced from their camping site at Ballyfermot, Dublin.

It is assumed that the question refers to the itinerants at present encamped on land at Ballyfermot owned by the Dublin Corporation and reserved for industrial use. I am informed by the Corporation that they have no proposals at present to provide a permanent site for camping by itinerants. They have no express statutory authority to do so at the present time. The question of conferring such powers on sanitary authorities is being considered, in common with the other recommendations of the Commission on Itinerancy, by the Departments concerned.

Is it proposed to leave these itinerants at this particular site until the Minister has come to a decision on matters arising out of the report of the Commission on Itinerancy?

I understand they are still at that site; they have not been disturbed.

Does the Minister think it is intended to disturb them in the immediate future?

I know of no such intention.
