Vol. 206 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National College of Art.

44.

asked the Minister for Education if he is satisfied that the size of the National College of Art is adequate for those requiring admission to it.

I am satisfied that no applicant should be admitted to the National College of Art who has not the necessary potential to benefit to a reasonable extent from the courses being given in that College. I am satisfied also that on that basis the size of the College is at present adequate.

45.

asked the Minister for Education what steps, if any, he intends to take regarding the National College of Art in order to meet the criticism of the College in the report by the Scandinavian Design Visiting Commitee.

The Preliminary School in the College has already been re-organised and arrangements have been made for the appointment of a Professor and an Assistant Professor of Design to the Design School. A Council of Design has been set up and the future arrangements for producing designers is one of the matters to be considered by it.

I did not ask about the school of design. I asked about the National Gallery of Art. Is the Minister aware that Mr. Giles Talbot Kelly has stated that they have student teachers there because there is not sufficient pay for trained teachers, that there is no laboratory, practically no equipment——

Quotations are not allowed during questions. I should not have allowed that quotation.

I cannot deal with the quotation as it is not in order but I can say that several important steps have been taken to improve the educational facilities in the National College of Art.
