Vol. 206 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Electricity Supply to Dublin Barracks.

47.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Defence whether the cable and fittings necessary for a new electricity supply line to the soldiers' married quarters at Cathal Brugha Barracks have been delivered; when work on the installation of it commenced; and whether it will be completed and in operation before Christmas in order to avoid any further hardship to families there.

Some of the fittings have been delivered. The underground cable has not yet been received but I understand that it is at present in transit from England. It will not, therefore, be possible to have the installation of the new electricity supply line completed before Christmas.

Mr. Ryan

Having regard to the fact that this stupendous operation of connecting the homes of a few soldiers has been going on since February last, does the Minister realise that the country is beginning to wonder about the efficiency of our military services?

That matter does not arise on the question.

Mr. Ryan

I am asking the Minister for a reasonable explanation as to why it has taken 11 months to connect up the homes of soldiers living in barracks to a simple domestic supply.

If the Deputy will read the answer, he will find that the question he has asked has been adequately answered.

Mr. Ryan

The Minister says that they only ordered the cable in November. Why did it take them ten months to decide that they wanted a cable?

I would ask the Deputy to study the answers to the numerous questions he has put down.

Mr. Ryan

I would have done the job myself in the time I was putting down questions.
