Vol. 206 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Medical Specialists in the Prison Service.

52.

asked the Minister for Justice the total number of medical specialists, or others, trained in methods of prisoner rehabilitation at present attached to the prison service.

On the recommendation of the Inter-Departmental Committee on Crime Prevention and Treatment of Offenders special courses in the rehabilitative treatment of prisoners are now included in the training programme for prison officers. To date, 197 officers have completed the courses and nine of these, who are attached to the prison hospital services have undergone a further course in general nursing and psychiatric nursing; one of the officers is a certified psychiatric nurse. The Prison Medical Officer in charge of the psychiatric unit at Mountjoy, which was opened this year, holds a Diploma of Psychological Medicine.
