Vol. 206 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment Statistics.

3.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the total number of persons in insurable employment on the 31st March, 1963, 30th June, 1963 and 30th September, 1963.

The estimated average numbers in insurable employment, based on the numbers of social insurance stamps sold, in the 12 months period ending March, June and September, 1963, were 498,800, 497,700 and 497,500 respectively. The averages are given for 12 monthly periods as not all the stamps sold in a particular quarter relate to employment in that quarter.

4.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state for the period ended 31st March, 1963, 30th June, 1963 and 30th September, 1963, the figures for the total numbers of persons in (a) agricultural employment, (b) non-agricultural employment, (c) transportable goods industries, and (d) manufacturing industries.

The particulars requested at (a) and (b) of the Deputy's question are not available. The numbers of persons engaged in transportable goods industries in establishments covered by the industrial production inquiries were 172,200, 174,500 and 178,200 in mid-March, mid-June and mid-September, 1963, respectively. The corresponding figures for persons engaged in manufacturing industries were respectively 163,700, 164,400 and 168,600.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary kindly tell us when he expects to have available figures relative categories (a) and (b) of the question?

The only figures, so far as I am aware, that are likely to be available are in relation to male employees. They will be available in respect of the period ended 30th June and will be published at the end of the year.

May I take it these are the figures which are in the——

Irish Trade Journal.

Are these the figures which are ordinarily provided in the economic statistics compiled by the Central Statistics Office prior to the Budget and which appear in Table 7? I take it they relate to men engaged in farm work on 1st June?

Yes. The comparable figures would be given for 1962-63 in respect of the two half-year periods.
