Vol. 206 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Keeping of Pigs in City Areas.

5.

asked the Minister for Health whether the keeping of pigs within city areas is a probable source of infection in infant gastro-enteritis.

It has not been proven that the keeping of pigs within city areas is a probable source of infection of infants with gastro-enteritis. I am advised that the position in Dublin is that the incidence of the disease is no greater in the areas of the city where pigs are kept than in newly built areas where this does not occur.

I might mention that a special committee of the Medical Research Council has been constituted recently to investigate the causes of gastro-enteritis in infants under two years of age in Dublin city.
