Vol. 207 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Siting of ESB Pylons.

13.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if, having regard to the spoliation of the appearance and amenities of the east side of the Dublin mountains by pylons recently erected by the Electricity Supply Board, and to the growing public concern that the Electricity Supply Board is indifferent to the need to maintain the beauty of the countryside, and of cities and towns, he will take steps to ensure more careful and considerate development by the Board in future.

It is the invariable practice of the ESB to submit plans for building and constructional works, including transmission and distribution lines, for approval to the local authorities concerned. This was done in the case of the transmission line referred to in the Deputy's question and the necessary approval was obtained.

I am assured by the Board that careful consideration is given by them to the siting of transmission and distribution lines and that the aesthetic aspects are taken into account as far as practicable having regard to technical needs and costs.
