Vol. 207 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Standardising of Electrical Equipment.

52.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government if, having regard to the fact that the Dublin Corporation instal in houses built by them electrical sockets which oblige tenants to purchase the most expensive, most delicate and complicated electrical plugs on the market, he will have steps taken to ensure that in future sockets are installed which will permit tenants to use cheaper, sturdier and less complicated plugs.

I understand that the electrical socket outlets and plugs provided in Dublin Corporation dwellings have been chosen because of the additional safety and efficiency they afford, and that the plug, which incorporates a rated fuse selected to suit the consumption of the appliance being used, costs approximately one shilling more than an ordinary plug. I do not propose to request the Corporation to change their practice in this regard.

53.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government if, having regard to the desirability of standardising electrical sockets and plugs, he will specify sockets and plugs of one particular type size and quality for new houses before such houses can qualify for any State grant or loan.

The sizes and standards of electrical sockets and plugs are specified in Irish Standard 23:1950, and are further controlled by the ESB. Builders erecting new houses are required to satisfy the Board generally in relation to all electrical fittings and equipment. In these circumstances, I see no necessity for action on the lines suggested.
