Vol. 207 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transfer of Sligo Sub-Post Office.

103.

andMr. Gilbride asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for moving the sub-post office from Coola to Sooey, County Sligo; and if he had regard to the convenience of the residents of the districts previously accommodated at Coola, and particularly the townlands of Boley, Trimalawn, Roughan, Aughoo, Drumnasooey, Rockbrook, Mullaghmore, Tunnagh and Bloomfield.

The sub-office is being moved from Coola to Sooey as a result of the appointment of a new subpostmistress. The convenience of all the local residents was taken into account when the new appointment was being made.

Is the Minister aware that the transfer of Coola post office means that the people heretofore served in that area have now to travel two-and-a-half miles? Is he further aware that this is a fairly backward area and that as well as being deprived of the normal services, they are also being deprived of a telephone service? Did the Minister take these points into consideration?

All the matters referred to by the Deputy were taken into consideration by the Subpostmasters Appointments Board. They recommended a suitable person to me and I appointed that person as sub-postmistress.
