I intend to bring the Criminal Justice (Legal Aid) Act, 1962, into operation as soon as possible. This cannot be done, however, until I am in a position to make regulations under section 10 of the Act prescribing inter alia the fees which will be payable to solicitors and counsel under the legal aid scheme. Draft regulations have been discussed with representatives of the Bar Council and of the Council of the Incorporated Law Society. I am at present in consultation with the Minister for Finance regarding certain proposals in the draft regulations.
