Vol. 207 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Age Groups in the Republic.

1.

asked the Taoiseach the total number of young persons between fourteen and sixteen years of age in the Republic.

The total number of persons in the State aged 14 or 15 years last birthday, as returned at the 1961 Census of Population, was 113,965.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary say whether, if a question is put down next week, he would be able to give some indication of the educational situation with regard to the figures he has given, what percentage are in secondary schools, what percentage in vocational schools and so on?

It would be best to put down the question.

If the Parliamentary Secretary is able to give the number of children of these ages, he should be able to state where they are.

The Census of Population will give us the figures but it may not state what schools they are in.

I shall try it.

2.

asked the Taoiseach the total number of persons between the ages of sixteen and eighteen in the Republic.

The total number of persons in the State aged 16 or 17 years last birthday, as returned at the 1961 Census of Population, was 98,806.
