Vol. 207 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Safety Measures on Dual Carriageways.

16.

asked the Minister for Local Government what (1) anti-glare and (2) anti-crash measures are being taken for dual carriageways.

No hard and fast rules have been laid down for anti-glare or anti-crash measures on dual carriageways in this country. There is a considerable variety of opinion on the subject even in countries in which it has been possible to study the behaviour of traffic on dual carriageways over a long period and under all circumstances. On the evidence at present available, however, it does not seem that the erection of anti-crash barriers on dual carriageways would be a useful contribution to road safety at the present stage of traffic development in this country. As regards anti-glare measures, there are a number of possible treatments. A continuous hedge and wicker hurdles are among the measures used here.

With the very limited mileage on dual carriageway roads constructed in this country to date the treatment of medians is largely experimental and any reasonable measures proposed by the road authority in a particular case will be favourably considered.
