Vol. 207 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Qualifications of Driving Examiners.

15.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will ensure that the minimum requirements of driving testers under the Road Traffic Act, 1961, will be that they shall have passed the tests of the Institute of Advanced Motorists or their equivalent; and, if not, what qualifications such testers will have.

The qualifications required for the position of driver tester are set out in regulations made by the Civil Service Commissioners. Candidates for appointment must satisfy the Commissioners that they have had satisfactory driving experience, have a high standard of driving competence and are generally suitable for the position. The features of the competition conducted by the Commissioners for this purpose included a written examination on matters pertaining to the posts, an interview of candidates who were successful at the written competition and finally a practical test in driving.

I may also mention that driver testers will undergo an intensive course of instruction in the performance of their duties.
