Vol. 207 No. 7

Private Notice Question. - Imprisonment of Woman for Begging.

asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been brought to a recent court case in Galway city where a woman was sentenced to a month's imprisonment for begging; if he is aware that the woman in question is mother of 12 children; and that she is expecting another child; and if in view of the danger to her health he will arrange for the woman's release forthwith.

I have already on humanitarian grounds directed her release from custody.

When was this woman released? When did the Minister direct her release?

The decision to release the woman in question was taken by me early yesterday.

How early?

A considerable time before the Private Notice Question was put down.
