Vol. 208 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers - Purchase of Supersonic Planes.

27.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether or not the purchase price of the new supersonic jet aeroplanes will be borne by the Exchequer.

28.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the estimated cost of the purchase of the new supersonic aeroplanes.

29.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will give the Dáil an opportunity of discussing the advisability of purchasing new supersonic jet aeroplanes before any firm commitment is entered into.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take questions Nos. 27, 28 and 29 together.

I would refer the Deputy to the press announcement in the matter made by the General Manager of Aerlinte Éireann a few days ago. That announcement stated that delivery positions had been reserved by Aerlinte for two American supersonic aircraft on payment of a deposit refundable should the company decide not to enter into a contract with the approved American manufacturer. It was indicated in the announcement that the company had neither sought nor secured the approval of the Government for the purchase of supersonic aircraft.

I understand that estimates of the cost of the US supersonic aircraft will not be available until it has been decided what type of aircraft will be constructed. If and when the company seek my approval for the purchase of supersonic aircraft, very careful consideration will have to be given to the proposal, including consideration of what contribution, if any, would be made towards the purchase price by the Exchequer.

While the provision of funds for the purchase of additional equipment by the air companies is one for the Government and the Oireachtas, the actual choice of equipment is a matter for the company. I would not consider it desirable that the question of the type of plane should be a matter of discussion in Dáil Éireann.
