Vol. 208 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grant to Ballet Organisation.

2.

asked the Taoiseach whether his attention has been drawn to reports to the effect that the organisation sponsoring ballet dancing have announced that the promotion of this form of culture is seriously threatened by lack of funds: and if he will consider requesting An Chomhairle Ealaíon to make an advance to this body or, if it is not within their autonomy to do so, if he will favourably consider having made available a grant from whatever Government funds are suitable for the purpose.

I have seen the reports referred to. The relevant provisions of section 3 of the Arts Act, 1951, indicate clearly that the making of grants by An Chomhairle Ealaíon in individual cases is a matter entirely within the discretion of the Council.

I have ascertained, however, on inquiry of An Chomhairle Ealaíon, that the Council have already given the ballet companies more than £10,000 by way of assistance over the past four years and that they have entered into a commitment to give further assistance this year.
