Vol. 208 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Moy Drainage Scheme.

11.

Mr. Browne

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that, at a public meeting held in Shraheen Hotel, Foxford, County Mayo, attended by public representatives, grave dissatisfaction was expressed with the Moy drainage scheme which by-passes the drainage of the Shraheen area right in the heart of the Moy basin; and if he will now instruct the inspector in charge of the Moy drainage to have the Shraheen area surveyed with a view to having the many necessary drains in the area included in the Moy drainage scheme.

Representations have been received for the inclusion in the Moy drainage scheme of drains in the Shraheen area and they will be fully considered. I may mention that since works started on this scheme, about 300 applications have been received for extra drains. The engineers on the scheme are so busy on the approved works programme that time cannot be spared for examination of all these applications as they come and many of them have to be deferred. I can assure the Deputy that each application will be investigated on its merits but meanwhile the approved programme must be given priority.

Mr. Browne

May I take it that this investigation will be carried out and a survey made of the area at an early date?

Yes, that would be correct. I can give that assurance to the Deputy, but I should like to point out also that when the scheme was exhibited, there were no representations for the inclusion of these drains.
