Vol. 208 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Electricity Supply for Dublin Barracks.

103.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Defence if he is now in a position to state the precise date upon which the installation of a new electricity supply to married quarters at Cathal Brugha Barracks will be completed, and the supply connected.

As I previously informed the Deputy, the complete work of providing the new electricity supply comprises the repair of the internal wiring, the segregation of the individual quarters and the laying and connecting up of a new supply line. I cannot give a precise date on which all the work will be completed but I anticipate that it will be finished before the end of the present month.

Mr. Ryan

Does the Minister recollect that he told me over a year ago that this work commenced on 19th July 1962; that he told me in February this year that the work would be finished before the end of February; and is he now not in a position to state how long it takes the Army to connect up the flats of 100 people in married quarters in a Dublin barracks?

I told the Deputy that we failed to get qualified electricians through the ordinary channels of recruitment and we had to employ apprentices from the Army School. Their output of work was not what one would expect from qualified men. Also, as I pointed out to the Deputy, we had to await delivery of essential items for the work. I can tell the Deputy the internal wiring will be completed by the end of this week and it is expected the remainder of the work will be completed by the end of this month.

Mr. Ryan

We can discuss it on the Estimate.
